Suus Sugar

In addition to painting with acrylic, Suus works with a variety of other media and techniques. She frequently combines beeswax with resin and high-quality pigments in her art or uses mixed techniques such as oil paint, ink, photography and digital painting techniques.

Artist Suus Suiker paints nature as a colorful impressionistic world. The layering of melted wax give her work a remarkable optical depth.

Suus Suiker - artist at Gallery van DunSince childhood, Suus Suiker (b. 1966) has been drawing and painting. In his own words, “Always I had a colored pencil in my hand. Her talent was stimulated from home and as a matter of course, Suus pursued her education at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
After her education, she painted mainly on linen with acrylic paint and made drawings in graphite pencil. Whereas at the beginning of her career humans were the main subject of her canvases, in recent years Suus Suiker draws inspiration from nature. Her work is largely intuitive and reflects her admiration for nature.

Modern Impressionism

‘Within an artwork, I combine different atmospheres. Water lilies, for example, I merge with magnolias even though these flowers do not have the same flowering time,” artist Suus Suiker explains her work. That style of her recent work is very similar to the impressionism of French artist Claude Monet.

Artist of the Year 2020

For Suus, the most important thing is that her work has authenticity. The reason her art is constantly changing. Subject, theme, technique used and materials evolve over time. Her way of working and how the artist stands in the world are therefore reason for the Art Week Foundation to nominate her entire body of work. For the year 2020, Suus Sugar has been nominated artist of the year.

The winner will be announced on Nov. 8. For more information, see https://kunstenaarvanhetjaar.nl
